GAMBLER GULCH
(Distance about 16 km return), Elevation from 3120 ft
to 4900 ft
Nice hike through an abandoned mining town from the 1920's
to an old mining camp in a gulch. Scenic view into a valley with several
lakes and of the Ogilvie and Patterson mountain ranges.
Starting in Keno City (Elevation 3120 ft, N 63o 54' 36";
W 135o 18' 05"), on an unserviced road with rough sections. At 4.8 km
(Elevation 4100 ft, N 63o 57' 05"; W 135o 17' 10") turn right and
the HIKE ONLY Trail begins. The trail passes by an old log cabin and the
remains of the tramline. The trail leads to a tall metal building,
(Elevation 4.900 ft, N 63o 57' 14"; W 135o 15' 03") a recent mine
shaft (DO NOT ENTER). You are above tree line now. Continue on the trail
till you reach a junction, (right turn (East) leads to Faro Gulch)
Turn left (North) and after descending a few 100 meters you can see various
old buildings over a wide area, which are witness to the silver mining
boom in the 1920's. Follow the descending trail to Gambler Gulch and it's
old mining camp (Elevation 4.606 ft, N 63o 57' 4.2"; W 135o 14' 84"). From
here you either return and explore any of the other numerous trails
in this alpine region or you continue a short distance downhill (NNW).
This is a particularly nice stretch, overseeing the McQuesten valley
below and the Ogilvie and Patterson mountain ranges in the distance.
Back on a bush road (Elevation 4.060 ft, N 63o 57' 33";
W 135o 16' 00") turning left (NW) you return through Wernecke, the
old mining town from the 1920's to Keno City (circa 5 km).
